Understanding Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD)
Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) is a serious vascular condition caused by narrowed or blocked arteries that reduce blood flow to the legs and feet. Reduced circulation can lead to pain, difficulty walking, slow-healing wounds, and, in advanced cases, Chronic Limb-Threatening Ischemia (CLTI).
Prevalence & Awareness
PAD affects nearly 1 in 5 adults over age 60, yet studies show it is significantly underdiagnosed in the United States. One recent public health report found that millions of cases remain undetected, leaving patients without access to early, limb-saving care (source: KUTV “Check Your Health,” citing new PAD prevalence research).
Early diagnosis and intervention are critical to preventing progression to CLTI or amputation.

Million People Worldwide
PAD affects more than 200 million people globally
Million People United States
Nearly 10 million people (estimates range from 8–12 million)
Am I at risk?
By age: Most common over age 50; prevalence reaches 20–30% in adults 70+
Common Symptons
- Leg pain when walking (claudication)
- Rest pain, especially at night
- Slow-healing wounds or diabetic foot ulcers
- Coldness or discoloration in the foot
- Numbness or burning sensations
- Reduced ABI (Ankle-Brachial Index)
Who is Most At Risk
- Adults over 60
- People with diabetes
- Smokers (current or former)
- People with high blood pressure or high cholesterol
- Individuals with a history of heart or vascular disease
When PAD Progresses to CLTI
CLTI is the most advanced stage of PAD and includes chronic rest pain, tissue loss, or gangrene. It requires immediate medical attention to prevent limb loss.
How ARTAIRA® Supports Patients with PAD & CLTI
The ARTAIRA Arterial Compression Device delivers rapid, high-pressure intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC) to the foot, ankle, and calf to help restore blood flow in patients with compromised circulation. Through fast inflation and deflation cycles, ARTAIRA enhances arterial perfusion, supports microvascular function, and assists oxygen delivery to ischemic tissues.
This therapy provides meaningful support for patients who are not surgical candidates, are awaiting revascularization, or are recovering from vascular procedures—helping reduce rest pain, promote wound healing, and improve walking tolerance. By increasing arterial inflow and encouraging physiologic perfusion patterns, ARTAIRA enables clinicians to offer a non-invasive, home-based option that bridges a critical gap in PAD and CLTI management.
